New build, can anyone explain this set-up? : r/Plumbing

We just built a house, this is my first time with a house on a well system, so forgive my ignorance. I wanted this set up explained to me.

Want more information on galvanized water tank for well? Feel free to contact us.

The water comes in the house from the well and goes through the galvanized first. Then into the bladder, then to the rest of the house. As I understand it, the bladder is for consistent pressure. I asked our contractor what the galvanized tank was for and he said he thought it might be for water odor and taste but wasn't sure. The well guys who set it up won't call me back. We have smelly water that stains so I had a guy out to sell us a filtration system and all he had to say was that there is usually one tank or the other, but didn't know why there was both. I noticed by knocking on it that the galvanized seems to be empty, no water above the pipes, pressure on both tanks was where it should be.

It would be great if I actually understood how this set up works and if something is not right , could that be the reason for our stinky water. would be good to know before I throw down for the filter system. I think surfer is our issue there though, so probably not. Thanks for anything you have to offer.

The Importance of Water Pressure Tanks

Water pressure tanks, also known as well pressure tanks, are an integral part of many water systems, particularly those that rely on well water. These tanks play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and longevity of these systems. This article will delve into the importance of water pressure tanks, their function, types, benefits, and maintenance.

Understanding Water Pressure Tanks

A water pressure tank is a device that works with a well pump to maintain a steady flow and pressure of water in a house or building. It stores pressurized water that can be distributed throughout a home or property, reducing the need for the well pump to cycle on and off each time water is used.

How Does a Water Pressure Tank Work?

The operation of a water pressure tank is relatively straightforward. When the well pump draws water from the well, it pushes this water into the pressure tank. Inside the tank, there&#;s an air bladder that becomes compressed as the water fills up the tank, creating pressure.

When someone in the house turns on a faucet or appliance that uses water, the compressed air in the tank forces the water out and into the plumbing system. As the water level in the tank decreases, so does the pressure. Once the pressure drops to a preset level, usually around 20 psi, the well pump kicks back on to refill the tank and build up pressure again.

Types of Water Pressure Tanks

There are three main types of water pressure tanks: diaphragm, bladder, and galvanized.

Diaphragm Tanks

Diaphragm tanks have a rubber diaphragm that separates the water and air chambers. As water enters the tank, it compresses the air above the diaphragm, creating pressure.

Bladder Tanks

Are Outdoor Air Conditioner Storage Bags Necessary?

Bladder tanks work similarly to diaphragm tanks, but they use a vinyl bladder instead of a diaphragm. The bladder expands and contracts as water enters and leaves the tank, maintaining the pressure in the tank.

Galvanized Tanks

Galvanized tanks are the oldest type of pressure tank. They do not have a separate air chamber, so the water and air are in direct contact. Over time, the air can be absorbed into the water, causing the tank to become waterlogged.

Benefits of Water Pressure Tanks

Water pressure tanks offer several benefits:

Consistent Water Pressure

One of the main benefits of a water pressure tank is that it provides consistent water pressure. Without a pressure tank, the water pressure would fluctuate depending on how much water is being used and how hard the pump is working.

Protection for the Well Pump

By reducing the need for the well pump to run every time water is used, a pressure tank helps prolong the life of the pump. The less frequently the pump has to turn on and off, the less wear and tear it experiences.

Energy Efficiency

A pressure tank also contributes to energy efficiency. Because the well pump doesn&#;t have to run as often, it uses less electricity.

Emergency Water Storage

In the event of a power outage, a pressure tank provides a reserve of pressurized water that can be used until power is restored.

Maintaining Your Water Pressure Tank

Regular maintenance of your water pressure tank is essential to ensure its efficient operation and longevity. This includes checking the air pressure in the tank at least once a year and adjusting it if necessary. It&#;s also important to periodically inspect the tank for leaks or signs of corrosion and to replace the tank if it becomes waterlogged.

In conclusion, water pressure tanks play a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and longevity of well water systems. They provide consistent water pressure, protect the well pump from wear and tear, improve energy efficiency, and provide a source of emergency water. Whether you&#;re installing a new well water system or looking to upgrade an existing one, a water pressure tank is a critical component that should not be overlooked.
