Wrinkle Patch Skin Care Review

According to the latest TikTok trend, stickers might just be the key to smoothing out wrinkles. Known as wrinkle patches, these thin sheets of silicone are like fragmented face masks that adhere to the skin, smoothing out areas where wrinkles form, such as the forehead and around the mouth and eyes.

On TikTok, users have shown themselves testing wrinkle patches for the face, neck, and décolletage, comparing the skin-smoothing results to Botox and fillers. The hashtag #frownies, one of the leading wrinkle patch brands, has 69.2 million views, and #wrinklepatches has 18.8 million views, with videos featuring younger users and mature skin types alike.

As with most viral trends, we’re left wondering if face patches for wrinkles actually work. Read on to learn what dermatologists have to say about anti-wrinkle patches.

What Are Wrinkle Patches?

“Wrinkle patches work by covering the skin in order to decrease mobility in an attempt to prevent or improve wrinkles,” says Dr. Caroline Robinson, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Tone Dermatology.

They are often made of skin-safe silicone or paper that sticks to the skin and keeps it in place, so the skin stays taut and expression lines or wrinkles don’t have the opportunity to form or deepen. They come in different shapes and sizes for specific areas of the face, neck, and chest that are prone to wrinkles. Most wrinkle patches suggest wearing them overnight for the best results.

“Silicone pads like Wrinkles Schminkles are a great non-invasive option for lines coming from facial expressions or from folding and compression of the skin during sleep,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King says. “The pads help prevent transepidermal water loss — locking in moisture so the skin will be better hydrated and will be better able to repair itself and produce collagen. And the pad also keeps the skin flat, so this helps prevent the creases that form during sleep.”

Benefits of Using Wrinkle Patches

Sticking on wrinkle patches can aid in the short-term smoothing of wrinkles, helping the skin appear more plump and youthful. However, while TikTok users may claim that wrinkle patches give comparable results to Botox or fillers, the dermatologists we spoke to say that the results are limited.

“While wrinkle patches may sound promising, they have actually been around for decades and have never demonstrated long-term benefit in the improvement or prevention of wrinkles,” Robinson says. “Many of the benefits that are apparent after the patch is removed are short-lived.”

If you’re looking to create the effect of smoother skin for an event or you just want a bit of a facial refresh, wrinkle patches may help you achieve a bit of instant gratification. Wrinkle patches for the face can also contain other skin care benefits that contribute to anti-aging effects, like hydrating hyaluronic acid or skin-brightening vitamin C.

“Many wrinkle patches are silicone-based, and others contain skin care actives which may provide hydration and give a smoother appearance to the skin,” Robinson says. “I liken most wrinkle patches to sheet masks; they have the ability to improve skin hydration and can deliver skin care ingredients locally.”

Should You Try Wrinkle Patches?

Thankfully, trying wrinkle patches has relatively low stakes. Unlike injectables like Botox that relax the muscles that create the lines and have an effect that lasts months, wrinkle patches can give you short-term results without any needles.

According to King, silicone wrinkle patches are “safe for anyone to use,” although “caution should be used in areas prone to acne, rosacea, and other skin inflammation.”

Robinson also advises that wrinkle patches with active ingredients may not be for everyone. “For those with sensitive skin, wrinkle patches that contain active ingredients such as beta hydroxy acids or retinol can be potentially irritating to the skin,” the dermatologist says. “It is always a good idea to test any new skin care product before applying more broadly or leaving for long periods of time.”

What Are Hydrocolloid Patches? And Do They Work?

If you're like us and you love putting stickers on your notebook, laptop, and phone, you might just enjoy putting stickers on your face! Oh, and it also comes with the bonus of helping heal your pimples. Sweet right? But what are hydrocolloid patches and what makes them so special? Well, have you ever had a pimple and had the urge to pick and scratch? Same. In that case, hydrocolloid patches, A.K.A acne patches, are your best friends to keep you from further damaging your skin. Here’s the lowdown:

What’s an Acne Patch and What Are They Made Of?

  • Acne patches are made of hydrocolloid material that helps minimize pimples and jumpstart the healing process. Think of it as a tiny pimple-sized band-aid, without the band-aid pain!

  • The hydrocolloid material absorbs excess fluid from your pimple and traps it in as a gel-like substance to prevent further irritation.

  • By patching up your pimple, you don’t have to worry about accidentally touching or scratching your face with grimy hands (ew!). This keeps it from further exposure to bacteria (yay!).

There’s So Many Out There! Are They All the Same?

Acne patches come in different shapes, ingredients, and sizes! Same as people and same as pimples! Here’s some aspects to look out for when buying acne patches:

  • Thick or Thin?

The thickness or thinness of an acne patch will depend on the type of pimple you’re trying to cover up. The more protruded the spot, the thicker you’ll need to help absorb all the zit gunk. This also affects when you’d want to put your acne patch. In the daytime, you might want a thinner acne patch for extra undetectability.

  • How Sticky?

Some acne patches stick really well while some might fall off easily. This can depend on the quality of the acne patch but also depends on what kind of pimple you’re applying the acne patch to! If your pimple is bigger, make sure the acne patch is really sticky to get the most of the fluid out. A less sticky acne patch can be applied on smaller spots, as they’ll be able to adhere to your skin without too much hindrance.

  • To bevel or not to bevel?

Now we’re starting to get to the different appearances of the acne patch. The difference between a beveled acne patch and a regular acne patch is that beveled acne patches have a thicker center and thinner edge while a regular acne patch is flat all throughout. These are a little bit more noticeable due to the thicker center so they’re great for nighttime use!

  • Special and Ingredient-infused patches!

If you want to give your pores the extra T.L.C., some acne patches available can include pimple-fighting agents like Cica, Salicylic Acid, and Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, to name a few. Besides having special ingredients, some acne patches can have micro-needles or micro-darts, that go deeper into your pores—perfect for those early-stage pimples. Don’t be alarmed though! It won’t hurt and will dissolve into your skin quickly before you can even think to say, “ouch!”. These micro-needles are best for pimples that are still beneath the surface of your skin.

  • Make a statement!

Now if you really want to look like the human version of your sticker-covered device or notebook, you can have fun with acne patches that have personality—without sacrificing the function! These fun acne patches can come in different colors and shapes (stars and butterflies and flowers, oh my!). While they may lack in special ingredients, they make up for it in style, perfect for the ‘gram.

How to Use Acne/Pimple Patches

The most important thing is to follow the instructions on the package! Other than that, it’s best to apply the acne patch on clean skin (right after cleansing and before applying the rest of your skincare). Peel off the patch from its film and apply it to your chosen spot.

We hope this cleared up any questions you had about acne patches! Thanks so much for reading and remember to Just Keep Glowing!

Love,
The FaceTory Team
