It's important to note that sublimation transfer paper is different from the standard copy paper that you might use in your copier or standard inkjet printer, even though it may appear similar at first glance. High-quality sublimation paper should possess three essential qualities:

1. It retains sublimation ink effectively without causing the micro ink dots to blend.
2. It withstands high temperatures from heat press machines.
3. It efficiently releases the dyes onto the desired surface when heated.

Each of these characteristics is vital for successful sublimation and achieving the optimal results!

Many types of sublimation papers are available, and determining which one is best suited for your heat transfer projects might be challenging.

In my studio, I keep a variety of sublimation papers including A-SUB 125G, A-SUB 120G, A-SUB 105G, A-SUB ECO, TruePix paper, DyeMaster-R, and Printers Jack. There are many more options out there! So, what are the distinctions among them? Most of these papers function well across a diverse array of surfaces. Some papers are more specialized, but these should perform effectively for most sublimation needs.

Let’s examine a piece of A-SUB paper. This image shows the BACK side of A-SUB paper, which features the “A-SUB” print. Be sure to print on the opposite side, which is the side that appears white and unmarked.

How do you determine the best sublimation paper to use? One vital factor to consider is weight, as A-SUB offers a range of weights including 125g, 120g, 105g, and ECO. These numbers indicate the paper WEIGHT.

A-SUB 125g indicates 125 grams per square meter, making it the heaviest option. Heavier paper with thicker coating offers better ink retention and saturates your surface more effectively. If vibrant, full-color designs are your goal, opt for heavier weights. This is the paper I favor for nearly all projects. It fires up flawlessly in my Epson printer, producing fantastic images with true colors. It also exhibits high transfer efficiency, resulting in most of the sublimation ink transferring to the surface. Furthermore, 125g paper shows more durability than thinner papers, consistently standing up under various heat presses.

Tip: I’ve found that the 120g sublimation paper performs comparably to the 125g option and is often cheaper!

However, if you’re using 125 or 120 grams and encounter wheel marks, consider switching to a lighter option like 105 grams. Heavier paper may pose challenges on rigid surfaces (hard substrates), as there’s little room for ink movement, leading to blurriness or ghosting; in such cases, choosing thinner paper is advisable.

A-SUB 105g is the lightest of the A-SUB options. You might wonder why lighter paper is desirable when thicker offers richer colors. Lighter sublimation paper absorbs slightly less ink, making it preferable for seamless designs, like our full-color sublimation doormat or sublimation tumbler. This type of paper is also advantageous for printers that tend to leave wheel marks or excess ink during printing. For example, by switching to 105g paper with my Epson Workforce, I achieved much better results. However, a downside is that 105g paper may curl under high temperatures and doesn’t perform as well with heavy ink saturation, which could result in movement, bleeding, and ghosting; if your surface looks dull and faded, such as on a T-shirt, it may relate to the lighter paper used—heavier options yield more ink transfer for vibrancy.

What about A-SUB ECO paper? This is a budget-friendly sublimation paper option. If you’re conducting extensive sublimation printing, this might work for you, but improvement in cost is minimal; personally, I find it less worthwhile unless used in high volume. I’ve conducted tests comparing this paper to my other video

Weight is thus significant in choosing sublimation paper. Another important consideration is the compatibility of the paper with your printer. For instance, TruePix paper is optimized for Sawgrass sublimation printers. It’s 120 grams and suitable for various surfaces.

DyeMaster-R sublimation paper, designed for Epson, comes in at 105 grams. Its thinner composition might be due to the need for Epson Workforce printers—which were among the first widely adapted for sublimation—to use lighter paper.

You might have heard that people use regular paper for sublimation, like laser copy paper. It is possible to use laser copy paper since it stands up to the heat of heat presses, but the real question is whether inkjet heat transfer paper can effectively hold and release the ink.

I conducted a TEST with six different types of paper: three A-SUB varieties, TruePix paper, Laser Paper, and regular Copy Paper, to compare their performance. Here’s a summary of how each performed when pressed on polyester fabric (I used garden flag sublimation blanks):

The best options based on my assessments are A-SUB 125G and A-SUB 105G. It’s always wise to conduct such tests when starting to use your dye sublimation printer, trying out new paper, or embarking on a unique sublimation project.
