Pilar Valbuena PerezT5.13 Forest without borders: National Forest Inventory Networks and their potential for large scale monitoring and reporting Jenny Wong Lai Ping1 1 United Nations Climate Change Secretariat, Bonn, Germany The Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognizes the critical role of forests as terrestrial carbon sinks for combatting climate change and calls for transparency of climate actions, including those in the forest sector. The Paris Agreement continues to uphold the principle of transparency. It established the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) with the aim to build mutual trust and confidence among countries in their monitoring and reporting of climate actions and to track progress of such mitigation actions. Forests play a key role in all aspects of the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Numerous countries, both developed and developing, have identified forest and land use-related mitigation and adaptation measures and actions as part of their climate targets in their nationally determined contributions to fulfill the goal of the Paris Agreement. The world is now in an era where transparency of data and information and actions are indispensable for ensuring coordination among relevant ministries and agencies and effective decision-making at all levels. Transparent, robust and comprehensive data and information on greenhouse gas emissions and climate actions are essential for informing national policies, plans and strategies and helping countries meet their international commitments on climate change. The same applies to forest data and information and its reporting to multilateral environmental agreements. Additionally, robust institutional arrangements, including for national forest inventories (NFI) as part of national forest monitoring systems and GHG management systems, form the basis for ensuring transparent data and information from these processes and systems and for meeting the requirements for reporting under the ETF. The aim of this review analysis is to highlight the importance of transparency in monitoring and reporting and for building trust in climate actions. The analysis will provide an overview of the requirements and necessary elements for monitoring and reporting on the forest and land use sector in the ETF and the challenges faced. This background will serve as a basis for stimulating discussions and exploring potential collaborative solutions offered by strong institutional arrangements and collaborative networks (such as NFI networks) and to facilitate identification of effective capacity-building needs of developing countries.

Transmission Couplings And Chains
Transmission couplings and chains play essential roles in various mechanical systems, particularly in power transmission and motion control. Lets explore each of them:
1. Transmission Couplings:
Transmission couplings are devices used to connect two shafts together to transmit power while accommodating for misalignments, changes in angular velocity, and dampening vibrations. Here are some common types:
- Flexible Couplings:
These couplings provide a degree of flexibility to compensate for misalignments and reduce shock and vibration. Examples include elastomeric couplings, jaw couplings, and gear couplings.
- Rigid Couplings:
Rigid couplings are used when precise shaft alignment is required. They do not provide flexibility but ensure a direct and efficient transfer of power. Examples include sleeve couplings and clamp couplings.
- Universal Joints:
Universal joints (U-joints) are used to transmit rotary motion between shafts at angles, often in automotive drivetrains or industrial applications.
- Fluid Couplings:
Fluid couplings use hydraulic fluid to transmit power, providing a smooth start and allowing for some degree of misalignment. They are commonly used in heavy machinery and conveyor systems.
The choice of coupling depends on factors such as torque requirements, misalignment tolerances, and the specific needs of the application.

2. Transmission Chains:
Transmission chains are mechanical devices consisting of interconnected links used to transmit power and convey motion. They are commonly employed in various applications, including:
- Power Transmission
:Chains are often used in machinery to transmit power between rotating shafts. Roller chains, silent chains, and leaf chains are examples used in power transmission systems.
- Conveyor Systems
:Conveyor chains are integral components in material handling equipment, facilitating the movement of goods along assembly lines or within warehouses.
- Bicycles and Motorcycles:
Chains are essential components in bicycles and motorcycles, transferring power from the pedals to the wheels or from the engine to the drive wheel.
- Automotive Timing Chains:
Timing chains are used in internal combustion engines to synchronize the opening and closing of engine valves with the motion of the crankshaft.
- Lifting and Hoisting:
Chains are utilized in lifting applications, such as in cranes and hoists, providing a robust and reliable means of lifting heavy loads.
Proper lubrication and maintenance are crucial for the longevity and efficiency of transmission chains. The type of chain chosen depends on factors like load capacity, speed, and environmental conditions.
In summary, transmission couplings and chains are integral components in mechanical systems, enabling the efficient transfer of power, accommodating misalignments, and facilitating motion in various applications across industries. The selection of the appropriate coupling or chain type depends on the specific requirements of the system in which they are employed.
