There's no need for significant breakthroughs to reduce the weight of standard Group 24 Lithium batteries. If you watch a few teardown videos, you'll notice the cases are oversized, with a lot of extra material used to fix the cells within the battery enclosure. One recent teardown showed the bottom quarter of the case filled with rubber that held the batteries in place. That rubber alone weighed 5 lbs. The decrease in size is mostly due to better packaging, and the improved weight/density likely comes from Li Time using higher quality cells. No breakthrough chemistry is required.
Update:
I just spoke with my friend, Mr. Google, who checked with his wife, Wikipedia. She states that LiFePo4 batteries have an energy density of 220 Wh/L, while the Li Time website lists these batteries at 164.5 Wh/L. No breakthrough needed, just strategic marketing. By the way, their claim is likely valid for two reasons: 1) They are the only company promoting energy density, and 2) Because they've eliminated excess space inside the battery, they probably lead the industry in energy density.
Lithium Iron Batteries - General Discussion Forum
The technology he mentions, Lithium Iron Phosphate, isn't new. It has been utilized for several years in deep-cycle applications. Also known as LFP or LiFePo4, Lithium Iron Phosphate is different from Lithium-Ion, which is usually found in smaller devices like laptops and smartphones due to its higher energy density. Unlike Lithium-Ion batteries prone to thermal runaway because of the higher oxygen release during combustion, LiFePo4 is more stable. I haven't seen Lithium-Ion batteries marketed for deep-cycle trolling motor applications, though smaller versions exist for portable electronics like flashers and forward-facing sonar.
Efficient and thoughtful service can be expected from sinopoly.
Pricing Considerations
For LFP batteries, based on my limited research, there seem to be two price categories: approximately $350 or less, and between $700 to $900 for a 100Ah deep cycle battery. While I haven't previously researched Dr. Prepare batteries, my comments are based on an initial review of their website. Some cost factors appear to include:
- Cell Types: Options include pouches, cylindrical, and prismatic. Prismatic cells seem to be preferred, though I couldn't find the cell type on Dr. Prepare's website.
- BMS Design: Features like high/low temp protection and over/under charge are critical. Some batteries lack low-temp protection, risking permanent damage if charged cold. This battery has a low-temp cutoff set at 41°F. Most others I reviewed were around 32°F, suitable for LFP batteries.
- Case Design: Some cases are thermally fused, while others allow repairs without damaging the case.
- Company Origin: All cells seem to come from China. Lower-cost batteries are sold/shipped from Chinese companies, while US-based companies handle some final assembly for higher-cost options.
- Warranty: The length and value of warranties vary greatly. Some are so aggressively prorated that they’re essentially worthless after a few years.
- Warranty Service: Lower-priced batteries often have warranty service conducted by the Chinese seller, leading to limitations like time zone differences and delays in processing claims. Higher-priced retailers tend to perform their own troubleshooting and can repair and ship batteries within 24-48 hours, though ground shipping for LFP batteries takes the longest.
- Construction Quality: Numerous online teardown videos show varying quality. Some lower-tier batteries are poorly constructed, while others are well-made despite the lower price.
Many buyers are satisfied across both price tiers.
