UHMW-PE Fender pads and fenders are produced by a sintering process either from virgin or from reclaimed material (aprox. 70% reclaimed +30% virgin material - also named double-sintered or blended UHMW-PE).

Which is stronger HDPE or UHMW?

UHMW material property is better than HDPE, and it always is produced by the pressing method, while HDPE is normally produced by extrusion, the pressing method can make the material stronger than extrusion. so UHMWis much stronger than HDPE.

Is UHMW bulletproof?

Which is harder Delrin or UHMW?

Delrin is stiffer and stronger in unfilled form, has shorter molding cycles, easy to machine, has low moisture absorption, and has a better surface finish.

Is nylon stronger than UHMW?

Nylon and UHMWPE are different.  They belong to engineering plastics but have different applications.  UHMW wear strips, chain guides, packaging machinery parts, and marine dock fender pads. Nylon is a strong and stiff engineering plastic with outstanding bearing and wears properties and they are used for bushings, rollers, rings, and pulleys, etc. They are all in their own applications strong plastics.

Can UHMW be welded?

Yes, it can, but UHMWPE can only weld the same material, if for other materials like HDPE, then it is not possible.

Can you bend UHMW with a heat gun?

If the thinner UHMWPE sheets ( thickness under 10 mm ) can be bent with the screws, a heat gun helps too.

What will stick to UHMW?

If want to stick some different materials to UHMWPE, need to use special binders, then can stick Delrin, rubber, polyethylene, wood, metals, glass, and concrete to UHMWPE.

Can UHMW be drilled?

Yes, when molding the UHMWPE raw material into sheets, then it can be drilled with different size holes or different depth grooves.

We can treat UHMWPE material and its thermoplastic plastic sheets with 0 water absorption. That is why the UHMWPE liners are popular in truck and coalbin and hopper linings because they will not absorb water and not moisture absorption. So will not adhere to any materials to make the bock up the problem.

How do you glue UHMW to UHMW?

1. Wipe the oil stain or dust on the material name with rags first.

2. Use a brush or scraper to evenly brush the plastic glue on the UHMWPE sheet to be glued after treatment. The glue should be applied evenly in thickness and in place, without leaving blind spots. Apply adhesive on both sides if necessary.

3. After the glue is applied, it should be left in the air for 5 to 8 minutes (it is better to touch the glue without drawing), and then it should be pressed to make the two sides fit properly.

4. The fitting will have a certain strength immediately. The watch will dry for about 2 hours, and the strength will be measured after 24 hours.

What is the difference between white and black UHMW?

Usually, the UHMWPE granule or power is transparent, it has no color, when mixing the certain color master batch into raw material, then it can make different color sheets.  White color sheets are must pure and virgin material, but black color sheets may be virgin, or maybe recycled.

How much does a sheet of UHMW cost?

UHMW or UHMWPE sheets&#; prices are different, it depends on their size and thickness. Generally, we calculate it per kg.

Is UHMW self-lubricating?

Yes, it is.  UHMWPE does not like steel, and needs to add lubricating oil, it can work naturally with very good self-lubricating and has an extremely low friction coefficient.

Does UHMW have a shelf life?

Under normal storage, the UHMW products can keep good property within 5-10 years.

Can you cut UHMW with a circular saw?

Yes, we can. unlike polypropylene, UHMW does not melt when you cut it, so the&#;chips&#; remain soft. The material does tend to collect on the saw blade, which will throw the material up as it is cut, so we will use a blade guard.

Can you cut UHMW with a water jet?

Yes, we can.  Water jet cutting is the preferred method for us to manufacture UHMWPE parts.

Do you grease UHMW bushings?

No, UHMWPE material has a very good self-lubricating property, it does not need any oil to grease.

Fenders - Best practice examples

Oil, gas and LNG terminals have one thing in common: the highest safety levels in the industry, since just the smallest incident could results in major and sometimes fatal accidents. Therefore, ensuring the highest safety level is the most important consideration when designing high performance fender systems for #oil, #gas and #LNG terminals.  &#;

So what is important? PART I

Hull Pressure 

A Low hull pressure is required for oil and gas carrier, but especially for LNG carriers, which is why these terminals need fender systems which reliably ensure low hull pressure during berthing. This can be achieved by using fenders with a linear increase of energy absorption and reaction force &#; such as Foam Fenders or Pneumatic fenders.  

A back-to-back fender solution in a Parallel Motion Fender configuration could be another suitable option. Here, two rubber cone fenders are mounted &#;back-to-back&#; between the substructure and the steel panel using different rubber hardness grades &#; this can ensure a soft landing especially if smaller vessels berth at the terminal as the reaction force will not be that high during the initial deflection of the softer fender.   

Reaction force to substructure 

Usually, oil, gas and LNG terminals are constructed using dolphins as their substructure. Dolphins are very different compared to bulkhead concrete substructures which is why the reaction force plays a vital role. As dolphins are pile structures, they are more load sensitive than concrete bulkheads, therefore the reaction forces introduced into the structure is typically limited. Using an appropriate fender type being designed exactly for such a berthing situation is mandatory  to prevent damages or accidents.  

Fender Type 

The following fender types are very suitable for oil, gas and LNG terminals: 

&#;&#; Foam Fenders with their linear increase in energy and reaction and their characteristic of adapting to the shape of different types of vessels 

&#;&#; Parallel Motion Fenders with their characteristic of low hull pressure and their ability to provide the same energy absorption at any impact level, together with the advantage of reduced reaction forces for the substructure. Additionally, Parallel Motion Fenders avoid a second contact on the hull of the vessel, limiting the risk of damages to the vessel.
