This survey, approved by the Allahabad High Court, has garnered significant attention regarding how the ASI evaluates the age, time, and style of sculptures. Importantly, ASI has stated that their methods will be non-invasive, ensuring no damage occurs to the site.

Relative Dating

Relative dating is a technique used to determine the chronological sequence of artifacts without ascertaining their actual ages. This method relies on the stratigraphic or archaeological age of specimens. Through this archaeological approach, the relative ages of fossils can be inferred without needing precise absolute dates.

Seriation

Seriation looks at variations among object forms at a site to establish a chronology based on design changes over time. This technique is particularly useful in scenarios where absolute dating methods, such as radiocarbon dating, cannot be utilized. By arranging various artifacts chronologically, it helps to identify older and newer objects at the site while not determining exact ages.

Carbon 14 dating

In the Gyanvapi case, Hindu plaintiffs requested carbon dating of the Shivling located in the disputed area. Carbon-14 dating, established by Willard Libby in the late 1940s, can date organic materials up to 60,000 years. The method is based on the radiative decay of Carbon-14 isotopes.

However, carbon dating is not applicable in every scenario, particularly for non-living materials like rocks.

Radiometric dating includes various techniques, with carbon-14 being one method, primarily focusing on the presence of radioactive isotopes to establish age.

Notably, geologists utilize materials with longer half-lives when dating. For example, potassium-40 transitions to argon-40 with a half-life of 1.26 billion years, used to date geological materials.

Ground Penetrating Radar

A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey employs radio waves to image subsurface structures without excavation. The ASI plans to perform a GPR survey at the Gyanvapi site beneath three domes to explore if a Hindu temple existed prior to the mosque being constructed.

GPR surveys provide data that can help locate natural or artificial objects and assess changes in their positions through high-frequency electromagnetic pulses. The analysis of received signals generates a 3D representation of the area.

As the ASI conducts its survey, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has appealed the Allahabad High Court's ruling, with the Supreme Court agreeing to review the case.
