Coil Wrap or PVC Trim Replacement?

#9 Post by bicknell » Thu May 31, 2012 11:24 am

If you want to learn more, please visit our website Coated Aluminum Coil.

I spoke with the person who might be wrapping our trim and asked about the specifics of replacing trim on siding. He laid out the process, similar to the common questions we've encountered. One way involves leaving the wooden sill intact, replacing the surrounding trim, and adding a filler piece between the new window and the existing sill. However, he was not in favor of this approach, suggesting it might have been what the other contractor quoted.

The alternative is to replace some or all of the sill, depending on the window construction. This would involve a higher labor cost and might approach the expense of a full-frame replacement for a quality finish.

Understanding the issue after his explanation and reflecting on the questions here, I contacted the PVC trim replacement contractor. I asked to see completed projects, and he promised to provide two nearby examples. These homes are within a mile from me, so I plan to inspect them, suspecting they used a similar trim approach with the sills left intact.

If this is confirmed, I'll proceed with the wrap contractor. His pricing is better, he seems more knowledgeable, and his references are outstanding.

Which Coil Stock to Use?

I'm about to start applying aluminum for window trim and wood fascia. In my area, contractors often use vinyl-coated aluminum coil stock on wood fascias and plain white aluminum for window trim. Is there a specific reason for this? Which would be more durable, or should I use both? Additionally, I have a brake for installation. I'm also installing 3/8 inch fanfold over sheathing. Should I install it before or after the aluminum-wrapped wood trim? Do I need to add house wrap over the 3/8 fanfold? Thanks in advance for your advice.
